Responsible Business Practice

The Virgin brand is built upon Richard Branson’s core philosophy - if you keep your staff happy then your customers will be happy, and if you keep your customers happy then your shareholders will be happy.

It is Virgin people who deliver brilliant customer service, who give the company its personality, who shape its culture, and who innovate. Virgin people are Virgin’s greatest asset. That’s why we believe in treating our people with respect, looking after their welfare and allowing them the freedom to be themselves and flourish.

We provide clean, healthy and safe working conditions

  • We train employees to be aware of the organisation’s Health and Safety policy and understand how it operates.
  • We strive to create a sensitive working environment conducive to wellbeing; using ergonomic work stations, natural light, plants, colour, and music and visual entertainment where appropriate.
  • Where uniforms are required, our remit goes beyond safety, comfort and identity – we want them to be attractive and nice to wear.

We provide clear and fair terms of employment

  • Employment contracts exist for all permanent staff. Temporary staff who work for longer than one month are entitled to a written statement of terms and conditions.
  • We won’t tolerate harassment or bullying in any shape or form.
  • Agreements are in place with the relevant unions in each industry where applicable (e.g. Virgin Trains have a contractual agreement with the RMT, the TSSA and ASLEF; Virgin Atlantic work with CC89, Amicus and BALPA).

We strive for equal opportunities for all present and potential employees

  • We have equal opportunities policies in our companies. We aim to employ people who reflect the diversity of society and we value people and their contribution irrespective of age, sex, disability, sexual orientation, race, colour, religion, marital status or ethnic origin.
  • We do not discriminate against anyone for their membership of or affiliation to any trade unions or political parties.
  • We do not tolerate any sexual, physical or mental harassment of our employees.
  • Procedures are in place to respond to accusations of workplace discrimination, harassment and victimisation.
  • An effective employee grievance procedure is in operation, and is properly communicated to our people.
