Employee reward and recognition has evolved significantly over the past few years. While gift cards, experiences and travel incentives remain popular ways to thank employees, there is a growing trend towards something more purposeful: conscious gifting for employees.
Today’s workforce is increasingly interested in the values behind the products, experiences and brands they engage with. Employees want to work for organisations that care about people and the planet, and they’re increasingly appreciative of rewards that reflect those same principles.
Recently, the Virgin Incentives team visited one of our fantastic experience providers, Sipsmith Gin Distillery, to explore how conscious gifting can play a role in employee reward and recognition. Our visit provided a fascinating insight into how memorable experiences and purpose-led brands can work together to create meaningful rewards.
What is Conscious Gifting for Employees?
At its core, conscious gifting for employees is about choosing rewards that align with wider social, environmental and ethical values.
Rather than simply selecting a gift based on cost or convenience, businesses are increasingly considering factors such as:
- Sustainability
- Social impact
- Responsible sourcing
- Supporting local communities
- Environmental credentials
- Employee wellbeing
Conscious gifting doesn’t mean sacrificing quality or enjoyment. In fact, the most successful reward programmes combine meaningful experiences with positive impact, creating rewards that employees genuinely value and remember.
Whether it’s a sustainable product, a charitable initiative or an experience provided by a purpose-driven business, conscious gifting allows organisations to demonstrate that their values extend beyond the workplace.

Why is Conscious Gifting Growing in Employee Reward & Recognition?
Employee expectations are changing.
Today’s employees are looking for more than just a payslip at the end of the month. They want purpose, connection and alignment with the organisations they work for.
Research consistently shows that employees are more engaged when they feel connected to their employer’s values. Reward and recognition programmes provide a perfect opportunity to reinforce those values through thoughtful gifting choices.
This is one reason why conscious gifting for employees is becoming increasingly popular. Rather than offering generic rewards, businesses are looking for experiences and gifts that tell a story and create a meaningful connection.
Experiences are particularly powerful because they create lasting memories. Unlike many physical gifts, an experience can be shared with friends and family, talked about for years afterwards and associated with positive emotions. When those experiences are delivered by businesses that are committed to doing good, they become even more impactful.
Spotlight on Sipsmith Gin
Founded in 2009, Sipsmith changed the gin industry forever.
After successfully campaigning to overturn centuries-old legislation, Sipsmith became London’s first copper pot distillery in almost 200 years. Their mission was simple: bring exceptional London Dry Gin back to the city where it was born.
Since then, Sipsmith has become one of the UK’s most recognisable gin brands, renowned for its craftsmanship, attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Visitors to the Sipsmith Distillery in Chiswick can explore the fascinating history of gin, learn about the distillation process and discover the story behind the brand’s pioneering journey.
It’s no surprise that the Sipsmith Distillery Tour has become one of the most popular experiences available through Virgin Experience Days.

What Does It Mean to Be a B Corp?
One of the things that makes Sipsmith particularly relevant when discussing conscious gifting for employees is its status as a Certified B Corporation.
B Corps are businesses that meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. Rather than focusing solely on profit, B Corps commit to balancing people, planet and profit in their decision-making.
For employees, customers and corporate partners alike, B Corp certification provides reassurance that a business is actively working to create a positive impact. At Sipsmith, this commitment can be seen through initiatives including:
- Reducing emissions and improving operational sustainability
- Using renewable energy
- Creating inclusive workplace practices
- Supporting local communities
- Reducing packaging waste
- Investing in continuous environmental improvements
Their iconic London Dry Gin bottle now contains recycled glass and has been redesigned to reduce its overall environmental impact, demonstrating how even small changes can contribute towards larger sustainability goals.

Behind the Scenes: Our Visit to Sipsmith
Recently, members of the Virgin Incentives team visited the Sipsmith Distillery to experience the tour first-hand and explore the growing role of conscious gifting within reward and recognition.
From the moment we arrived, it was clear why this experience is so highly regarded.
We were welcomed with a seasonal gin cocktail before stepping behind the scenes to learn about the remarkable history of both Sipsmith and the wider gin industry.
The team took us through their famous copper stills, affectionately known as Prudence, Verity and Constance, explaining the meticulous process behind every bottle they produce.
Of course, no visit would be complete without a tasting session. We sampled a selection of Sipsmith gins while learning about the carefully selected botanicals that give each expression its distinctive character. One of the highlights of the day was learning how to pour and serve the perfect G&T ourselves – a skill that some members of the Virgin Incentives team may now be claiming they’ve mastered!
Alongside the tour and tastings, we also had the opportunity to discuss how businesses are increasingly looking for more meaningful ways to reward employees. Experiences like this offer something far more memorable than a traditional gift, while partnerships with purpose-led brands like Sipsmith help add an extra layer of value.
The Future of Conscious Gifting for Employees
As employee expectations continue to evolve, we expect to see conscious gifting for employees become an even bigger part of reward and recognition strategies.
Employees increasingly want rewards that reflect their interests, values and lifestyles. They want flexibility, choice and memorable experiences that make them feel genuinely appreciated. At the same time, employers are looking for ways to strengthen engagement, reinforce company values and create more meaningful recognition programmes.
Purpose-led experiences offer a powerful way to achieve all three.
